Director
Department of Agriculture

On March 19, 2002, the Department of Agriculture filed a proposal to adopt a permanent rule restricting the use of pesticides containing the active ingredient clopyralid.

Rule Summary:

The rule, if adopted, would:

  • make products containing clopyralid “state restricted use” pesticides when labeled for use on lawns and turf, including golf courses, cereal grains and grass grown for hay. State restricted use pesticides can be sold only by licensed dealers and purchased only by licensed pesticide applicators.
  • prohibit the use of pesticides containing the active ingredient clopyralid on lawns and turf, EXCEPT:
    • on golf courses if no grass clippings, leaves or other vegetation are removed from the site and sent to composting facilities that provide product to the public; and
    • on lawns and turf when applied to non-residential sites such as schools, parks, businesses if the individual with physical authority over the site sends a signed, certified letter to the department indicating that no grass clippings, leaves or other vegetation are removed from the site and sent to composting facilities that provide product to the public.
