The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA), in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), established the WSDA Avian Health Program in 2006. The WSDA Avian Health Program provides information to increase awareness about poultry, poultry diseases and how to keep birds healthy.

The main goals of the program are to:
  1. Educate the poultry industry and owners in Washington State about:
    1. Serious poultry diseases, such as Avian Influenza and Exotic Newcastle Disease
    2. Protecting their birds from diseases (bio-security)
    3. The WSDA Avian Health Certification Training program, which provides basic information about avian diseases and bio-security
  2. Increase surveillance--establish a first line of defense:
    1. Through disease testing and monitoring programs at sale yards, county community fairs, backyard flocks, farmer's markets, game bird producers, and commercial poultry operations.
